A day of baitfishing

Our waters around Bodø produces good quality fishing. With experience and the right bait you can come far. Last week I went baitfishing with friends a place I have been fishing for some time now on the north side of Bodø. It`s shallow with a great sand bottom and the perfect place to cath flounder and larger species of the flat fish family. On flounder rigs I have cought a few small wolfies and of course as allways small cods that usually is the standard sidecatch. Larger cods has been cought on my sliding rigs but last week I succeded landing a halibut about 10 kg.

After years of fishing for this magnificent fish I know that shorefishing for halibut is demanding, I can fish a shorline for days or weeks and landing several cods but no halibut and suddenly one day there can be a train on my baitrunner taking several meters of line before I manage to take a hold on my rod, stop the fish and fight it towards me. It is a game of patience. But the fishing is allways exciting since you never know if something strange, big or small and interesting takes the bait.

Could things get any better? Fishing in conditions like this makes you feel like a king. Marius and Thomas, beginners in baitfishing, if they only knew what they have comming in the future, a great loss of fishing rigs, lures, lines and broken rods, but the payment is priceless with great catches and a meeting with nature around the shorelines cannot be any better than when you struggle to find the right time and place for the right fish. I`m not telling them all I know after all the years on the shorelines.

It's good to be alive!

Just some cleaning up in front of the house and we are ready to handle it over to the new owners. In 45 days we will take over our new home, untill then we are living at in-laws on the attic. Now I`m one step closer to total fishing, the next big project is of course moving in to our new home that needs a few layers of paint. Almost brand new house, built in 2007 and one owner before us. Small but good quality house with balanced ventilation and a sentral vacuum cleaner system wich I would gladly trade in for living like we used to, almost without neightbours and close to the sea.

Closing in to brighter days and warmer sea, I am preapering my boat and gettin ready to do some fishing again.

  
Now that we are soon to be finished with the sale of our house I can start to concentrate on more important things such as flyfishing, halibut, Shadjigs and baitfishing again. It`s eastern and the rabbit can be at the doorsteps at any moment with a new rod, a couple of wading boots or just the good idea about a new rig for red spottet flounder. I have in the last few months got some new ideas......

Earlyer this year just as the sun climbed over the horizon, -5 degrees and no winds.
We have had our share of bad weather this year with winds, rain and snow. I find it harder for every year to find good conditions to fish in the three first months of the year, this really amputate the best season for codfishing.

Now I will be going to the local fishing store to purchase this new line from Berkley. It might be the best thing for my fishing for seatrout, looking foreward to test this in the holidays now.
I hope it will reduse noise on the surface, and also keep the lure  from striping, it`s too early too low water temperature for that.

Day of the cod

Åge had a great day of fishing yesterday. With a 300gr. sinker and herring on a mustad 1,0 hook he managed to pump this 20 kg cod up from the bottom of Saltstraumen.
He had several long outruns and the powerful currents did not make it it easy to land the fish but by the help of the strong back of his shimano technium there was no big problems. We also landed two wolffish about 5 kg each.
